For example, “The Betsy Poetry Rail,” an installation featuring poetry etched into metal by water jets, honors 12 poets who have shaped Miami’s history and culture. Among these voices are LGBTQ+ advocates and writers, including Richard Blanco, the fifth presidential inaugural poet in U.S. history, whose work champions diversity, immigration rights and arts education, and Julie Marie Wade, a poet and Florida International University professor whose essay was a finalist for the 2024 Lambda Literary Award in LGBTQ+ Nonfiction. In The Piano Bar, The Betsy presents’ photography by Miami Beach native Andy Sweet, who captured Ocean Drive during the ’70s and ’80s—especially the LGBTQ+ population and older Jewish immigrants, many of whom were Holocaust survivors.
