Behind the Scenes at “The Office”
In October 2011, Groban appeared as Walter, Andy Bernard’s brother, on NBC’s “The Office.” During our interview, he shared his memorable experience working on set alongside the cast.
How would you describe your overall experience on the show and who’s your favorite cast member?
Groban: The experience was fantastic — it’s a testament to how much fun everyone had. I was there for two days, long hours in the heat, but the cast’s humor and humility made it an incredible experience. It’s rare to find a cast with such camaraderie, and I hope to return soon.
Were you a big fan of “The Office” before appearing?
Groban: Absolutely. I’ve loved the series since the British version and was thrilled when it came to America. Watching it through the years, I admired how well they adapted it, and it was an honor to be part of it.
Playing Walter—Andy’s Naïve Brother
Groban described Walter Jr. as a cheerful, naive character who admires his older brother. The episode explores the family’s musical roots, featuring a rivalry between Walter and Andy, which reflects family dynamics and sibling rivalry.
Does Walter Jr. know about Andy’s competitive side?
Groban: I think Walter loves Andy dearly and might be a bit unaware of his brother’s competitive streak. He looks up to him, but subconsciously, rivalry may be bubbling under the surface.
From Music to Acting: A Natural Transition
Growing up, Groban was fascinated with theater, Shakespeare, and improv comedy. He attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and studied musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University.
He reflected:
Groban: Acting was always a huge part of my ambitions. Even with my singing career taking off early, performing on stage and screen has been a natural extension of my artistic journey. The comedy and acting elements bring me joy, and I look forward to doing more.
Musical Rivalry and Family Roots
The episode showcased a musical rivalry within the Bernard family, with Stephen Collins portraying their father—a talented musician himself.
Did your real-life relationship with your brother influence your portrayal?
Groban: Definitely. My brother and I share the same birthday, and we’re best friends. We’ve collaborated in music and film. That sibling bond, full of love and friendly rivalry, helped me bring authenticity to Walter Jr.

Groban: Watching the cast improvise and play off each other was inspiring. I’d love to work with any of them again.
He also shared his desire to continue acting, especially in theater:
