St. Thomas University Partners with GEM to Support Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa

STU and GEM

In response to Hurricane Melissa’s destruction in Jamaica, St. Thomas University (STU) in Miami Gardens has partnered with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), Doral-based aid organization, to provide critical relief and recovery efforts.

Starting this weekend, STU student volunteers will assist GEM in assembling relief kits bound for Jamaica. Additionally, the university will launch a campus donation drive to raise funds for direct aid. This initiative aligns with STU’s broader mission to serve the Caribbean, building on existing agreements in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and other regional nations.

Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, has caused extensive damage, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and damaging key infrastructure. GEM has already delivered $10 million in aid to Jamaica and expanded support to Haiti.

“Our partnership ensures a swift, impactful response,” said STU President David A. Armstrong. Together, STU and GEM are committed to helping Jamaica recover and rebuild.
