Miami Dade College Coach Susan Summons

In addition to this milestone, Summons was recently honored as a 2025 National HISTORYMAKER, joining an elite group of national figures recognized by The HistoryMakers, a prestigious nonprofit dedicated to preserving and celebrating the stories of influential African Americans in history, sports, education, and beyond.

“I am humbled to become the first active African American woman coach in the NJCAA D1 division to reach 700 wins and be among the top 8 winningest JUCO coaches in America, but I don’t focus on milestones. Impacting the lives of people, supporting student-athletes, and creating champions for life is what I do.” Susan Summons.

“This remarkable milestone is a reflection of Coach Summons’ leadership, dedication, and the profound impact she has had on countless students in our community. Her mentorship has shaped generations of student-athletes, instilling the values of hard work, perseverance, and excellence,” said Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega.

“As a trailblazer and the first African American woman in the NJCAA to achieve this impressive feat, Susan has made history. I am proud to have been a player on her first MDC win as a student-athlete myself. We are honored to celebrate this historic accomplishment and the lasting legacy she continues to build at the College.”

Summons has dedicated her career to developing athletes both on and off the court. Known for her unparalleled leadership, strategic prowess, and unwavering commitment to her players’ growth, she has transformed the Miami Dade College women’s basketball program into a powerhouse, inspiring generations of athletes to achieve excellence.

“Coach Summons is a legendary figure in women’s college basketball, and winning her 700th game is a significant milestone, but her legacy goes far beyond the extraordinary number of wins. Throughout her career, she has been equally committed to fostering the growth of young women as students, athletes, and citizens, and the FCSAA is a better association for her contributions as a coach, mentor, and leader on the Miami Dade College campus. I extend my sincere congratulations on win #700 and wish her many more!”

“Coach Summons is a leader in collegiate athletics and a life-changing individual who has not only had a huge impact in collegiate basketball but in the lives of women for many years at Miami Dade College. I met Susan when I first came here almost seven years ago and never dreamed I would get to be on the Kendall Campus as the president and see her win her 700th game. She is truly an amazing leader, and as I see her athletes around campus, they exude her confidence and discipline. We are blessed at Miami DadeCollege to have her as a leader of women, and I am honored to call her not only coach but a friend.”

In her storied career, Summons has garnered numerous accolades, including WBCA National Coach of the Year, three-time USABasketball Assistant (Bronze Medal), and recognition as a Top 100 Most Influential Sports Educator in America and Top 50 Most Influential Business Professional in South Florida.

The historic 700th win took place during an electrifying game against Florida Southwestern State College, with a final score of 77 to 51.
