One part art + design fair, one part ultimate concept store, one part five-day hyper-curated musical showcase, Superfine! House of Art & Design’s Miami edition represents the first incarnation of an international lifestyle brand that blurs the line between high-impact contemporary art and inspired functional design.
With future iterations set for New York City and other major design hubs including Copenhagen and Mexico City, Superfine! brings together dynamic designers, exciting artists, and bespoke brands to celebrate cutting-edge international talent with a distinctly Miami tilt.
From December 2-6 2015, Miami’s hot Little Haiti/Little River neighborhood will serve as the backdrop for Superfine! specifically a 20,000 square foot piece of the future Citadel mixed-use retail project at 8300 Northeast 2nd Avenue. A multi-sensory installation by Miami-bred, New York-based visual artist and designer Diego Montoya will transform the interior of the space into a three-dimensional living tableau. Raised in Little Haiti, Montoya is known for his September 2015 commission for a Rihanna and Stance collaborative release at the Refinery29 headquarters in Manhattan, as well as his over- the-top installations at the critically regarded MIX NYC Queer Film Festival.
Exhibitors hailing from far flung locations such as Copenhagen and New York City, as well as nearer locales like St. Petersburg, Florida plus Miami’s own creative community will have their work integrated into the common areas of the event as well as in a progressive open floor plan format organized around a central DesigNNucleus lounge area. The DesigNNucleus will play host to confirmed nightly musical guests including Baio of Vampire Weekend, Shamir, Lauv Aeroplane, Gilligan Moss, Krisp, Jeffery Paradise (of Poolside) and Miami hometown favorites Afrobeta, Millionyoung and Bedside.
“Superfine! House of Art & Design is all about exploring the question of where art ends and design begins. As a curator and entrepreneur, I’ve long wondered why there has to be a line between the two. My overarching goal is to use Superfine! as a platform to replace the division with something much more interesting that has broad appeal and exciting implications for the art and design community as well as hotel and hospitality decision makers, property owners, and regular people with a passion for the aesthetic. By choosing an emerging neighborhood like Little Haiti, we also tie in the idea of putting culture first and commerce second when it comes to place-making,” says Alex Mitow, Founder of Superfine! House of Art & Design.
Daily programming will include design round tables that confront questions such as “Where does art end and design begin?” hosted by guest curators including Julia Haney Montanez of the critically regarded Architectural Digest Design Show’s MADE section. Special projects within Superfine! include Caja de Cultura, an interdisciplinary thread woven throughout the exhibition that celebrates the Pan-American Latino contribution to art + design as well as Miami’s unique culture, with public round table discussions of challenges and solutions for Hispanic designers led by curators and exhibitors. Food and beverage at Superfine! House of Art & Design by the trailblazing team behind Morgan’s of Wynwood, The Annex pop-up restaurant, and the upcoming Sherwood’s in Little Haiti.
New York-based fashion curator Kelvin Goncalves’ designer webshop ELKEL will present a living art piece in which models adorned in avant-garde apparel bloom out of spacial art and create an interactive performance. Miami’s own neon-knit fashion queen Karelle Levy will host Friday’ evening’s festivities
Superfine! House of Art & Design is the fruit of a partnership of New York-based creative groups FAME by Alex Mitow and Imagination in Space, with Conway Commercial Realty and Urban Atlantic Group, pioneers of the emerging neighborhood and the nearby MADE at the Citadel creative shared space.
Thomas Conway and Nick Hamann of MADE have major plans for the Miami neighborhood, anchored by The Citadel, a 60,000 square foot mixed-use retail project akin to Fred Segal in Los Angeles and Gotham West Market in New York. Playing host to ten different restaurants and a bevy of local and national fashion brands, The Citadel will be a cultural hub of the Little Haiti/Little River neighborhood.
With its myriad cultural offerings, Superfine! is an opportunity for Little Haiti to shine, and as developer and neighborhood champion Conway states, “The area is going through mindful gentrification. We want to make sure it is within reach of those who are from Miami, and our focus is on making Miami the next generation city it has the potential to be.”
