Suzet Hernandez, principal at South Miami Heights Elementary, spoke about the impact this event has on her students: “We have some children that are homeless. We have some children that come from very low income families, they have very little to eat. So we know who we have in school and based on that we make our selection.”

Dolphins players Chris McCain, Kenny Stills, Jordan Kovacs, Michael Thomas, Ced Thompson and John Denney were on hand to interact with the students.

“A lot of our students love football,” Hernandez said. “Some of them don’t have a father figure at home, so being with the Dolphins players and having a role model is a great opportunity for them to know that there is a future out there for them. And by staying in school, they can certainly accomplish that.”

More than 100 students from McNicol Middle (Broward), Palm View Elementary (Broward), South Miami Heights Elementary (Dade), Pine Lake Elementary (Dade) and Crosspointe Elementary (Palm Beach) enjoyed a DJ, arcade games, dinner and a backpack filled with color pencils, pens, notebooks, loose leaf paper, folders, index cards, pencils, glue sticks, highlighters and a Dolphins supply pouch.

“I think it was really important for me to get involved because I don’t really remember having the greatest time shopping for school supplies or ever having an NFL team pass out backpacks in my area,” Stills said. “It’s been really cool to come and get the kids excited about going back to school and helping the kids with school supplies, playing games and just spending time with them.”
