The Premium Grocery & Gourmet Markets Guide: How to Stock a Miami Kitchen

The PGM guide to Miami's best grocery stores, specialty markets, fishmongers, butchers, and the places locals actually shop when they want to eat well at home.

Love Miami

Overview

Miami's grocery landscape is more interesting than most cities its size.

The Latin American influence means that ingredients unavailable in most American supermarkets are standard stock here — the full range of tropical fruits, the cuts of meat that Cuban and Colombian and Peruvian cooking requires, the dried chiles and the fresh herbs and the specialty cheeses that make the city's home cooking as good as its restaurant cooking.

But the landscape is also fragmented.

The best fishmonger is not in the same neighborhood as the best butcher.

The best Latin produce market is not the same place as the best natural foods store.

Knowing where to go for what is the difference between a good Miami kitchen and a great one.

This is the guide.

Love Miami

The Anchor Supermarkets

  • Milam's Markets

    The Miami institution.

Milam's has been operating in South Florida since 1939, and the stores — particularly the Coral Gables and South Miami locations — remain the best full-service supermarkets in the city.

The produce section is excellent, the butcher counter is staffed by people who know what they're doing, the seafood is fresh, and the prepared foods section is genuinely good.

The wine selection is better than most dedicated wine shops.

If you can only shop at one place, Milam's is the answer.

📍Multiple locations — Coral Gables, South Miami, Pinecrest

  • Epicure Market

The South Beach institution has been on Alton Road since 1945 and remains one of the best specialty grocery stores in Miami.

The deli counter is extraordinary — the smoked fish, the prepared salads, the house-made dishes — and the wine and cheese selection is among the best in the city.

The prices are high but the quality justifies them.

    A Miami Beach essential.

    📍1656 Alton Rd, Miami Beach

  • The Fresh Market

The national specialty grocer has several South Florida locations and consistently outperforms the standard supermarket chains on produce quality, prepared foods, and specialty items.

The butcher counter is reliable and the seasonal produce selection is excellent.

A good option for those who want a full-service supermarket experience with a specialty market sensibility.

Love Miami

The Latin Markets

  • Sedano's Supermarkets

The Miami-based Latin supermarket chain is the best place in the city for Cuban and Latin American staples: the full range of tropical produce (mamey, guanábana, tamarind, plantains at every stage of ripeness), the cuts of meat that Cuban cooking requires (palomilla, vaca frita cuts, lechón), the dried beans and the rice and the sofrito bases.

The prices are excellent and the selection is unmatched for Latin ingredients.

    Multiple locations throughout Miami-Dade.

  • Presidente Supermarket

Similar to Sedano's in its Latin American focus, with particularly strong Caribbean and Central American sections.

The Hialeah and Little Havana locations are the best for authentic ingredients.

The bakery section — Cuban bread, pastelitos, croquetas — is excellent.

  • Bravo Supermarkets

Strong in Caribbean and South American ingredients, with a particularly good selection of Colombian, Venezuelan, and Dominican products.

The prepared foods section at the larger locations is excellent for a quick lunch.

Love Miami

The Specialty Markets

  • Whole Foods Market

The national chain has several Miami locations, with the Brickell and Lincoln Road stores being the most useful.

The prepared foods, the cheese counter, and the specialty pantry items are the strengths.

The produce is good but not exceptional.

Best used for specific items — the cheese counter, the bulk section, the specialty pantry — rather than as a primary grocery store.

  • Trader Joe's

The value proposition at Trader Joe's is real: the house-brand products are consistently good, the prices are fair, and the selection of specialty items (the cheeses, the frozen foods, the pantry staples) is well-curated.

    The produce is inconsistent.

Best used for pantry staples and the specific Trader Joe's items that have developed cult followings.

  • Lucky's Market

The Colorado-based specialty grocer has a South Florida presence and offers a good selection of natural and organic products at prices below Whole Foods.

The prepared foods section is excellent.

A good option for those who want the Whole Foods experience at a lower price point.

The Fishmongers

  • Miami Fisheries

The wholesale-to-retail fish market in the Design District is the best place in Miami to buy fresh fish.

The selection changes daily based on what came in, the prices are wholesale-adjacent, and the staff can tell you exactly where the fish came from and when it arrived.

The stone crabs (in season, October through May) are the best in the city.

Call ahead to confirm hours and availability.

  • Captain Jim's Seafood

The Coconut Grove fish market has been operating for decades and maintains a loyal following among the neighborhood's serious home cooks.

The selection is smaller than Miami Fisheries but the quality is consistently excellent and the service is personal.

  • Casablanca Seafood Bar & Market

The Miami River fish market and restaurant is the most atmospheric place to buy fish in Miami — the boats come directly to the dock, and the fish on the counter was in the water that morning.

The stone crabs and the whole fish are the move.

The restaurant attached to the market is excellent for a casual lunch.

📍400 NW North River Dr, Miami River

The Butchers

  • Proper Sausages

The Wynwood butcher shop and charcuterie producer is the best place in Miami for house-made sausages, cured meats, and specialty cuts.

The staff is knowledgeable and the products are made with care.

The prepared foods — the sandwiches, the charcuterie boards — are excellent for a quick lunch.

    📍Wynwood

  • Laurenzo's Italian Market

The North Miami Beach institution has been operating since 1954 and remains one of the best Italian specialty markets in South Florida.

The butcher counter, the house-made pasta, the imported Italian products, and the prepared foods are all excellent.

A Miami institution that deserves more attention than it gets.

📍16385 W Dixie Hwy, North Miami Beach

The Cheese & Specialty Shops

  • La Boulangerie Boul'Mich

The French bakery chain has several Miami locations and is the best source for French bread, pastries, and a curated selection of French and European specialty products.

The croissants are the best in the city.

The cheese selection is small but well-chosen.

  • Cheese Course

The specialty cheese shop in Coral Gables is the best dedicated cheese retailer in Miami, with a selection that covers the full range of French, Italian, Spanish, and American artisan cheeses.

The staff is knowledgeable and the accompaniments — the charcuterie, the crackers, the preserves — are well-chosen.

Love Miami

The Farmers Markets

  • Coconut Grove Farmers Market

The Saturday morning market in Coconut Grove is the best farmers market in Miami — a genuine mix of local produce, artisan food producers, and prepared foods vendors.

The tropical fruit selection is extraordinary in season.

The prepared foods — the tamales, the empanadas, the fresh juices — are excellent.

Arrive early; the best vendors sell out by 10am.

📍Grand Ave & Margaret St, Coconut Grove — Saturdays 8am–3pm

  • Lincoln Road Farmers Market

The Sunday market on Lincoln Road is more tourist-oriented than the Coconut Grove market but has a good selection of local produce and artisan products.

The prepared foods vendors are excellent.

A good option for those staying in Miami Beach.

📍Lincoln Road between Meridian and Euclid — Sundays 9am–6:30pm

The PGM Rule on Miami Grocery Shopping

The best Miami kitchen draws from multiple sources: Milam's or Epicure for the anchor shopping, Sedano's for the Latin staples, Miami Fisheries or Casablanca for the fish, the Coconut Grove Farmers Market for the seasonal produce.

No single store does everything well.

The city's grocery landscape rewards the shopper who knows where to go for what — and that knowledge is one of the things that separates the Miami resident from the Miami visitor.
