Miami Music Week & Ultra: The PGM Playbook

Every March, Miami becomes the global capital of electronic music for ten days. Here is how to navigate it — the festival, the conference, the pool parties, the label showcases, and the parts the tourist guides miss.

What Miami Music Week Actually Is

Miami Music Week is not one event.

It is a ten-day collision of the global electronic music industry that happens every March.

  • The anchor:

Ultra Music Festival — two weekends at Bayfront Park, 165,000 attendees, the biggest names in commercial electronic music.

    Spectacular production, enormous crowds.

  • The culture:

The Winter Music Conference (WMC) — the industry's oldest trade gathering — plus hundreds of pool parties, label showcases, boat parties, and club nights running simultaneously across the city.

  • The distinction:

    Ultra is the spectacle.

    MMW is the culture.

Knowing the difference changes the entire experience.

The serious electronic music crowd is at the showcases and the clubs, not at the main stage.

  • The scale:

Every major DJ, label, and promoter in the world is in Miami that week.

    The city's hotel rates triple.

    The restaurants are booked.

The energy is unlike anything else on the calendar.

Ultra Music Festival

Ultra takes over Bayfront Park in downtown Miami for two weekends in March.

One of the largest electronic music festivals in the world — 165,000 attendees across three stages.

  • The main stage:

The Mainstage is where the headliners play.

Tiësto, David Guetta, Hardwell, Martin Garrix — the biggest names in commercial electronic music.

    Spectacular production, enormous crowds.

  • Resistance:

The underground stage inside Ultra is where the serious electronic music happens.

Techno, house, and experimental programming that draws a different crowd entirely.

Worth the ticket price on its own.

  • The production:

Ultra's stage design and lighting is among the best in the festival world.

Even if the lineup isn't your taste, the spectacle is worth experiencing once.

  • The logistics:

    Bayfront Park is downtown.

Rideshare is the move — parking is a nightmare.

The venue is walkable from Brickell hotels.

Buy tickets early; the good ones sell out months in advance.

The Pool Parties & Showcases

The pool parties are where MMW actually lives for the industry.

Every major label, agency, and brand hosts events at hotels across Miami Beach and the mainland.

  • The Surfcomber:

The historic South Beach hotel hosts some of the most consistent pool party programming of the week.

    Mid-size, good sound, manageable crowds.

  • The Fontainebleau:

The grand dame of Miami Beach hosts the biggest brand activations.

Expect production, expect crowds, expect to spend money.

  • The W South Beach:

Boutique pool parties with tighter curation and better access to the artists.

  • The honest reality:

Most pool parties are invite-only or require industry connections.

The ones with public tickets sell out fast.

Follow the labels and agencies you care about on social media starting in January.

that's where the invites come from.

The Club Circuit

While Ultra runs at Bayfront Park, the city's clubs run their own parallel programming that is often more interesting.

  • The Edgewater institution runs marathon sessions throughout MMW — 24-hour parties, sunrise sets, and bookings that rival any festival lineup.

The terrace at dawn during MMW week is one of the great music experiences in the world.

  • Do Not Sit on the Furniture:

The South Beach micro-club books artists who are too interesting for the festival circuit. 200 capacity.

    Get there early.

  • Treehouse:

Miami Beach's serious electronic club runs nightly programming throughout the week.

More intimate than Space, equally committed to the music.

  • The local reality:

The clubs are where the artists actually want to be.

After their festival set, the headliners go to Space or Do Not Sit.

If you want to be in the same room as the people who make the music, skip the festival and go to the clubs.

Survival Guide

Ten days in Miami during MMW requires a strategy.

  • Book accommodation in October:

Miami Beach hotels during MMW week charge three to five times normal rates and sell out completely.

Book as early as possible or stay on the mainland and Uber in.

  • Avoid South Beach on Saturday night:

The combination of Ultra crowds and regular weekend traffic makes South Beach essentially impassable.

    Plan around it.

  • The Brightline is your friend:

The train from downtown Miami to Fort Lauderdale runs throughout the week and bypasses the worst of the traffic.

  • Eat before the parties:

Restaurant waits during MMW are brutal.

Eat early, eat well, and don't try to get a table at a popular spot after 8 PM.

  • The best nights are Tuesday and Wednesday:

The industry crowd is in town but the tourist volume hasn't peaked.

The clubs are full of people who are there for the music, not the spectacle.

Local vs. Tourist Reality

Miami locals have a complicated relationship with MMW.

The week brings the global music industry to their city — genuinely exciting.

It also brings traffic, inflated prices, and crowds that treat Miami as a backdrop.

  • What locals do:

    Skip Ultra entirely.

Go to Club Space on a Tuesday night when the serious crowd is there.

Hit the smaller showcases at venues like Do Not Sit on the Sundeck.

    Avoid South Beach until Thursday.

  • What tourists do:

Buy Ultra tickets, stay on South Beach, pay $30 for a cocktail at a hotel pool party, and leave thinking they experienced Miami Music Week.

They experienced one layer of it.

  • The honest advice:

If you're coming for the music, research the showcase schedule before you book anything.

The best performances of the week happen at venues that hold 500 people, not 165,000.

  • The price reality:

Ultra weekend hotel rates in Miami Beach are among the highest of the year.

Book early or stay in Brickell and rideshare.

    The savings are significant.
