Independent Cinema in Miami: The PGM Guide to Gables Cinema and MFF GEMS

Miami has one of the best independent cinema ecosystems in the South. Coral Gables Art Cinema and Miami Film Festival GEMS are the anchors. Here's how to use them.

Miami's Independent Cinema Ecosystem

Miami is not the first city that comes to mind when people think about serious film culture. That's a mistake.

The city has two institutions that would be the envy of cities twice its size: Coral Gables Art Cinema, which has been called "the shining city-on-a-hill of the Miami cinemas," and Miami Film Festival GEMS, the fall showcase from Miami Dade College that brings awards-season films and filmmaker appearances to South Florida before their theatrical releases.

This guide covers both — what they are, what's playing, and how to get the most out of Miami's independent film scene.

Coral Gables Art Cinema: The Anchor

Coral Gables Art Cinema at 260 Aragon Ave is the best independent cinema in South Florida. Full stop.

The programming is genuinely excellent — a mix of current arthouse releases, retrospectives, special events, and filmmaker Q&As that would hold up in New York or Los Angeles. The physical space is intimate and well-maintained. The membership program is one of the best values in Miami cultural life: 16 months for the price of 12 during the October drive.

  • What's on now:

Fjord, Cristian Mungiu's Palme d'Or winner starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, runs through October 29. Romania's official entry for the 99th Academy Awards. "Fjord is breathtaking cinema in more ways than one." — Kyle Smith, Wall Street Journal.

  • Coming soon:

Bitter Christmas, the new Almodóvar film, gets its exclusive Florida theatrical premiere at Gables Cinema starting November 19 — the only cinema in the state showing it during its first week. Members-only preview on November 19 at 8:15 PM. Regular screenings from November 20.

  • Neo-Noirvember:

The cinema's November programming series includes Body Double (November 7) and Under the Silver Lake (November 14) — a curated noir series that runs alongside the regular program.

  • Membership:

gablescinema.com. The October drive offers 16 months for the price of 12. Free screenings, advance booking, and member-only events are the core benefits.

Miami Film Festival GEMS: The Fall Showcase

Miami Film Festival GEMS runs October 29 through November 5, giving South Florida audiences an early look at the year's most anticipated awards-season films. The fall showcase pairs screenings with filmmaker appearances, seminars, parties, and special events across venues in Greater Miami.

This year's highlights:

  • Everytime

  • Clarissa

    — Fresh from its Cannes premiere, a modern-day Nigerian reimagining of Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway with Ayo Edebiri, India Amarteifio, Sophie Okonedo, and David Oyelowo. Coral Gables Art Cinema, November 4 at 7 PM.

  • Tangles

    — Animated adaptation of Sarah Leavitt's graphic memoir with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Seth Rogen, Abbi Jacobson, and Bowen Yang. Coral Gables Art Cinema, October 31 at 3 PM.

The Venues

GEMS uses multiple venues across Greater Miami. The key ones:

  • Coral Gables Art Cinema

    — 260 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables. The best screen in the program. Intimate, well-programmed, and the home of the Florida exclusives.

  • Silverspot Cinema

    — 300 SE 3rd St, Downtown Miami. A larger, more commercial venue that handles the bigger GEMS screenings. Good sight lines, comfortable seats.

  • Bill Cosford Cinema

    — University of Miami campus. The festival's academic home. Smaller, more intimate, and the venue for some of the more challenging programming.

  • MDC's Koubek Center

    — 2705 SW 3rd St, Little Havana. A community-focused venue that brings GEMS programming to a different part of the city.

  • O Cinema

    — Multiple locations. The Wynwood and South Beach locations are both in the GEMS circuit.
