URWERK's UR-300 Time Quantum Takes Watchmaking to the Subatomic Level
After nearly three decades exploring outer space through its timepieces, Geneva's URWERK turns the lens inward — to the invisible interactions of atoms and energy-charged particles. The UR-300 Time Quantum introduces a new kind of wandering hour that reconfigures itself entirely, every hour, in the blink of an eye.

Watches
URWERK has spent nearly three decades mapping the cosmos through its timepieces — orbital satellites, wandering hours, retrograde snaps that evoke the mechanics of the universe. With the UR-300 Time Quantum, the Geneva-based watchmaker inverts the lens entirely, turning its attention to the smallest scale of all: the invisible interactions of atoms and energy-charged particles that govern everything around us.
The UR-300 introduces a T-frame architecture unlike anything in the URWERK catalogue. Two hour modules are fixed perpendicularly, forming a T, with a tri-sided hour prism at each end of both modules — four prisms in total, indicating all 12 hours of the clock. The base of the T travels along a 108° arc marked with minutes from 0 to 60. At the 60th minute, three events happen simultaneously: the entire T-frame jumps forward and rotates 72°, the crossbar pivots around its midpoint to become the new stem, the previous stem rotates in the opposite direction to become the new crossbar, and all four hour prisms spin to display the next hour. The entire sequence takes place faster than the eye can follow — a quick-blink forward jump that URWERK calls the Time Quantum.
Felix Baumgartner, master watchmaker and co-founder of URWERK, describes the concept: 'The world of the atom is fascinating because it exists in a state of constant, temporary equilibrium. Introduce energy into the system and its structure breaks down, reorganizes and shifts into a new state. That idea of transition is what I wanted to translate into mechanics with the UR-300.' Co-founder and artistic director Martin Frei adds: 'Every hour, the mechanism disassembles and reassembles itself in the blink of an eye, faster than our minds can follow. At that moment, the person wearing the watch becomes part of the event.'
The engineering challenge is formidable. The jump must carry enough energy to drive the entire multi-component sequence without creating visible recoil or mechanical stress. Every tolerance must accommodate sudden acceleration at each hour while keeping gear engagement efficient. The result is a 44-hour power reserve movement — caliber UR-30.01V, automatic with Dual Flow Turbines, 40 jewels, 4Hz — housed in a 45.2mm × 58.8mm titanium case. The UR-300 Time Quantum is produced in two editions: Iron (Titanium Grade 5, 25 timepieces) and Dark (Titanium Grade 5 with PE-CVD treatment, 25 timepieces).
