Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
Hard Rock Live in Hollywood has hosted some of the most memorable nights in South Florida's concert history. Rod Stewart on February 28 added another one to the list.
Rod Stewart played Hard Rock Live in Hollywood on February 28, and the 81-year-old rock legend delivered a 22-song set that moved through five decades of hits, covers, and Faces material with the energy of someone who has been doing this his entire adult life and has no intention of stopping. He opened with "Infatuation" and moved through "You Wear It Well," the Faces' "Ooh La La," and "Tonight I'm Yours (Don't Hurt Me)" before a Bonnie Tyler cover of "It's a Heartache" and "Forever Young," which arrived with Irish dancing and a Scottish music interlude that turned the song into a full theatrical moment. "Tonight's the Night" was restarted after Stewart got the lyrics wrong — he acknowledged it with characteristic good humor and the crowd loved him for it. The Faces' "Stay With Me" and "Maggie May" drew the night's biggest singalongs before a run of covers — Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind," Tom Waits' "Downtown Train," the Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited" (with background singers on lead as Stewart went offstage), Harold Melvin's "If You Don't Know Me by Now," and the Impressions' "People Get Ready" — demonstrated the breadth of his influences. "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" closed the main set before the encore delivered the O'Jays' "Love Train" as a joyful final note.
