Ricky Gervais on Hosting the 68th Golden Globes: "I Like the Jeopardy — A Room Full of the Most Powerful People in the World. That's My Extreme Sport"

Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian Ricky Gervais — creator of The Office and Extras — returned to host the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 16, 2011 on NBC (8-11 p.m. ET), broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Premier Guide Miami's Daedrian McNaughton spoke with Gervais about why he agreed to host a second time ("I can do it better"), his philosophy that a comedian's job is to make people think as well as laugh, his admiration for Louis C.K., Jerry Seinfeld, and Chris Rock, and why he vowed this would be his final time hosting.

Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian Ricky Gervais — creator of The Office and Extras — returned to host the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 16, 2011 on NBC (8-11 p.m. Premier Guide Miami sat down to find out what that means — and what comes next.

Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian Ricky Gervais — creator of The Office and Extras — returned to host the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 16, 2011 on NBC, broadcast live coast-to-coast from 5-8 p.m. PT / 8-11 p.m. ET from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. At the previous year's show, Gervais took swipes at everyone from Mel Gibson to Sir Paul McCartney. Ratings for that broadcast rose approximately 18%.

On why he agreed to host a second time: "That's why I'm doing it again. I had such a great time but like anything you do for the first time you go, 'Oh, let me do it again. I can do it better.' I think it went well. I really enjoyed myself. I think I pitched it about right but I think I can go a little bit further. I want to really throw away the shackles of worry. I'm going to have even more fun with it, probably go a bit further, push the boundaries a little bit more. I think you always should. What's the worst that could happen? I didn't expect to be invited back a second time and I certainly won't do it a third. So I've got nothing to lose."

On the adrenaline of live television: "I like the jeopardy. It's live and there's a quarter of a billion people watching and a room full of the most powerful people in the world. I like that jeopardy. I love it. So that's my extreme sport. That's what gives me an adrenaline rush — thinking it could be the end of my career."

Love Miami

Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.

On his philosophy of comedy: "I think a comedian's job isn't just to make people laugh, it's to make them think. I'm not a lever of broad anodyne comedy. I feel a responsibility — I'm playing venues where people have traveled a long way, found a car parking space, paid $70, and I think I better have something special to say. I get as big a buzz from a gasp as I do a belly laugh. I want to take people on an emotional journey. Whatever happens with innovation in entertainment, it will never compete with one human being telling another human being what an awful day they've had."

On his favorite comedians: "The most exciting stand-up in the world at that moment is Louis C.K. The bravest, most honest comedian out there. He made me look at myself harder. Chris Rock — just incredible. Jerry Seinfeld — the master. And I just did a special: myself, Louis C.K., Jerry Seinfeld, and Chris Rock. We sat in a room for 4-1/2 hours and just talked about comedy — what we hate, what we love, how we approached it, our first bit we ever did, why we wanted to be a comedian. I think it will be fascinating for anyone in comedy. Christopher Guest — a God amongst comedians, I think."

On why he will not host a third time: "The truth is I'm not a host. I'm not a presenter. I don't think I should be doing it at all. I do these things for fun. I want this to be great and go out on a high. If I'm bad, I shouldn't do it again; and if I'm good, I shouldn't do it again. So that's the thinking really."
