Poppy Carlig, 24 — the youngest contestant on NBC's The Apprentice Season 10, a Stanford graduate with a Bachelor's in Human Biology and Master's in Sociology, and a four-time NCAA synchronized swimming champion — was fired after Kim Kardashian called her fragrance display station "an arts and craft project" that "lacks sophistication." Poppy Carlig, 24 — the youngest contestant on NBC's The Apprentice Season 10, a Stanford graduate with a Bachelor's in Human Biology and Master's in Sociology, and a four-time NCAA synchronized swimming champion — was fired after Kim Kardashian called her fragrance display station "an arts and craft project" that "lacks sophistication." Premier Guide Miami's Daedrian McNaughton spoke with Carlig about her rebuttal to Kardashian's critique, and the unexpected romance that blossomed with fellow contestant David Johnson — "The Virus" — after their eliminations.. Premier Guide Miami sat down to find out what that means — and what comes next.
Poppy Carlig, 24, from Richmond, California — a recent Stanford graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology and Master's in Sociology, and a competitive synchronized swimmer who made the Olympic training squad and won four NCAA championship titles — was the youngest contestant on NBC's The Apprentice Season 10. She was fired after Kim Kardashian called her fragrance display station "an arts and craft project" that "lacks sophistication."
On Kim Kardashian's critique: "After seeing the other team's product I agreed with the lack of sophistication. But at the same time, if you look at her promo material she is wearing this huge gaudy bow and rhinestone earrings that are enormous. So for her to say that we were entirely way off, I think she should look at her picture first."
On her romance with David Johnson: "After I was fired, all the contestants go to a place called the Ponderosa — a hotel for all the fired contestants. It was actually my birthday when I was fired. So we all went out to dinner as a group. The next day we went to Ellis Island and David took me aside and deeply apologized to me. I think he realized that I was more than just a well-educated young person. We had a long conversation and just sort of got to know one another. I definitely had a lot of reservations about him before entering the relationship. But we started hitting it off really well."
Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.
Carlig had been offered a job doing breast cancer research before the show, but the funding fell through due to the economic recession. She was living with her parents in Richmond and working part-time as a caretaker for her grandmother when she joined the cast.
The Apprentice Season 10 aired on NBC, Thursdays at 10:00-11:00 PM ET.
