PAMM Is Bringing One of Europe’s Greatest Private Art Collections to Miami
Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen opens at the Pérez Art Museum Miami with roughly 100 works assembled by German-born dealer Heinz Berggruen — the first time this collection has been shown in the United States.
Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
The Pérez Art Museum Miami is presenting Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen, an exhibition of approximately 100 works drawn from one of the most significant private collections of twentieth-century European modernism ever assembled. It marks the first time this collection has been shown in the United States.
The collection belongs to the legacy of Heinz Berggruen (1914–2007), a German-born art dealer who operated a Paris gallery in the mid-twentieth century and formed close personal relationships with the artists he championed — among them Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, and Alberto Giacometti. Today the collection is housed primarily at Berlin’s Museum Berggruen, part of the Neue Nationalgalerie.
A Rare U.S. Debut
Previously exhibited in Australia, China, France, Italy, Japan, and Spain, the show arrives at PAMM as its first North American stop. The museum has supplemented the Berggruen works with pieces from its own permanent collection of Latin American modern masters — Diego Rivera, Joaquín Torres-García, and Wifredo Lam among them — placing the European collection in a broader international context.
Opening Events
The exhibition opens with a Museum Circle Preview on October 28 (6–8 PM), exclusively for Museum Circle members. On October 29, PAMM hosts a Member Appreciation Lounge: The Modernist Salon (6–7:30 PM) followed by an Art Talk (7:30–8:30 PM) with Natalie Zimmer, curator at Museum Berggruen, and Maritza M. Lacayo, PAMM associate curator. Museum admission is free every Thursday after 5 PM.
