Inside the New World Symphony's 2026–27 Season: Masterworks, Multimedia, and a Free Outdoor Series

The New World Symphony (NWS), America's premier orchestral academy, enters its 2026–27 season under the artistic direction of Stéphane Denève. Operating from its architectural landmark — the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center in Miami Beach — NWS is welcoming 32 new Fellows to join 55 returning musicians. This season blends definitive masterworks with contemporary world premieres, multimedia storytelling, and the expansion of its revolutionary free public concert series.

Denève officially launches the season on October 3–4 with a vibrant Latin-focused program. Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers performs Arturo Márquez's Latin Grammy-winning concerto Fandango alongside works by Gabriela Ortiz and Debussy, culminating in Maurice Ravel's hypnotic Boléro. The orchestra then balances its contemporary repertoire with foundational cornerstones: Denève leads the orchestra and the Master Chorale of South Florida through Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (October 10–11), followed by Mozart's Requiem (November 14) and Mahler's Symphony No. 1 "Titan" later in the season.

NWS continues to push performance boundaries with immersive cinema and digital staging. In Strange Magic: Ravel + Stravinsky (January 30–31, 2027), the performance hall transforms into an immersive digital opera house using custom puppetry and animation. In March 2027, the orchestra presents Trees: A Live Cinema Documentary, blending a live score by Caroline Shaw with live narration by filmmaker Sam Green. Marking a first for the academy, the orchestra will also present Disney's Fantasia in Concert (January 9, 2027), performing the classical score live alongside the iconic hand-drawn animation.

In addition to its home base in Miami Beach, NWS returns to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Miami for three large-scale, one-night-only showcase events — including the November presentation of Mozart's Requiem, Disney's Fantasia in Concert, and a sweeping performance of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 — designed to provide broader regional access to the symphony's largest seasonal productions.

A central pillar of NWS's community accessibility is its signature WALLCAST Concert Series at SoundScape Park. Projected on the soaring 7,000-square-foot outdoor wall of the New World Center, these events allow thousands of citizens to experience live classical music entirely for free. Supported by the City of Miami Beach G.O. Bond Program, the 2026–27 WALLCAST series debuts state-of-the-art upgrades including ultra-crisp 4K UHD video projection and an energy-efficient audio overhaul. Scheduled outdoor broadcasts include Denève: Beethoven 9 (October 10), Prokofiev's Violin featuring James Ehnes (November 21), Brahms 3 (December 12), the Sounds of the Season Holiday Concert (December 19), Strange Magic: Ravel + Stravinsky featuring soprano Isabel Leonard (January 30, 2027), Denève: Mahler 1 featuring pianist Gabriela Montero (February 20, 2027), and Gershwin, Adams & Connesson featuring saxophonist Steven Banks (May 1, 2027).

On December 20, 2026, the symphony hosts a deeply personal milestone event: Remembering MTT. This special chamber music program honors NWS Co-Founder and Artistic Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas, featuring his original compositions alongside works by the master composers who shaped his musical world — celebrating nearly four decades of his institutional guidance.
