Neal Baer M.D. on Law & Order: SVU: "We Don't Want to Push a Particular Agenda — We Want to Show a Story Through Multiple Points of View"
Emmy-nominated producer Neal Baer M.D. — executive producer of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit — spoke with Premier Guide Miami's Daedrian McNaughton about the show's unflinching approach to political storytelling, from the backlog of rape kits to torture in Iraq, and why now is the time to have these conversations. The episode "Dirty" featured guest star Shohreh Aghdashloo as Detective Saliyah "Sunny" Qadri, teaming with Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson to investigate the murder of a district attorney. Law & Order: SVU airs Wednesdays on NBC (9-10 p.m. ET).

Neal Baer M.D. has a point of view. Premier Guide Miami asked the questions. Here is what we learned.
Emmy-nominated producer Neal Baer M.D. serves as executive producer of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on NBC. The episode "Dirty" featured guest star Shohreh Aghdashloo as Detective Saliyah "Sunny" Qadri, who teams with Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) to investigate the murder of Brooklyn District Attorney Page Ferguson. The episode was directed by Helen Shaver — an actress known for her role opposite Paul Newman and Tom Cruise in The Color of Money. Law & Order: SVU airs Wednesdays on NBC (9-10 p.m. ET), with the season premiere at 9-11 p.m. ET on September 22.
On the show's political limits: "It is probably the most political show on TV right now, but I don't think there is a limit to what we would do. There never has been. But we do try to tell stories that have a multitude of perspectives. We don't want to push a particular agenda; we want to show a story through multiple points of view — for instance through our characters. So we can take on very tough issues this year like the backlog of rape kits, or in the past we actually did torture in Iraq. We can take on those issues and through our characters' perspectives we can speak about them. And I think that now is the time to really have these conversations, particularly when doing that less and less often."
Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.
On working with Shohreh Aghdashloo: "It was a dream come true. I had seen House of Sand and Fog, of course, and we go after actors whom we admire and want to work with. Also what is interesting about this show is it's directed by a woman too, Helen Shaver, who's an actor who was opposite Paul Newman and Tom Cruise in The Color of Money — one of her very well remembered films. So it is really quite amazing."
