Nate Berkus on Launching His Own Show: "I Learned to Always Speak My Truth"

Popular design expert, New York Times best-selling author, and longtime Oprah Winfrey Show contributor Nate Berkus sat down with Premier Guide Miami to discuss the launch of The Nate Berkus Show — a daily syndicated lifestyle program exploring design, living well, and the stories behind the spaces we inhabit. Premier Guide Miami sat down to find out what that means — and what comes next.

Popular design expert, New York Times best-selling author, and regular contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show since 2002, Nate Berkus recently launched his own show. The Nate Berkus Show explores a broad range of lifestyle subjects, providing take-away information and inspiration designed to make a real difference in viewers' daily lives.

Nate Berkus on his start on Oprah and why the time was right for his own show: "What feels right to me more often than not is when things happen organically. My participation as a contributor to the Oprah show happened because I met a producer by chance at an art gallery. We started talking, that led to me doing a makeover, and it resonated for Oprah and for the audience and for me. I was not in a rush to do this. I wanted to do this in a way that felt right because I was very happy with my role on the Oprah show. I've had years to prepare for this."

On designing the set: "I wanted the set to feel like somebody was walking into my home every day. It's not like a fake home set with a staircase that leads to nowhere and books no one's read. It's a mix of vintage and new things. It's going to change up periodically as I become interested in different things happening in the world of design."

Love Miami

Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.

On why he chose New York over Chicago: "It just made sense business-wise. And ultimately, Oprah is in her 25th year and I'm launching a daily syndicated show. Oprah has one control room on Carpenter Street — I didn't want to be the guy that said, 'Just give me another ten minutes.'"

On what he learned from Oprah Winfrey: "I learned to always speak my truth. I learned to remain authentic. And I learned to listen before I speak."

The show features signature segments including Instant Design Studio — using 3D gaming technology to reimagine spaces in real time — Nate's Crate, and Curbside Pickup, where vintage finds and antiques are reconditioned and auctioned for charity at year's end. "It's a very compelling, exciting, energetic hour of TV that changes every day," Berkus said.
