John Turturro Is Coming to Miami Film Festival GEMS for a Career-Spanning Conversation
The actor, director, and writer behind Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, and Severance receives the Variety Creative Vanguard Award at GEMS — and sits down with Variety's Co-Editor in Chief for 75 minutes on Monday, November 2.
Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
There is a particular kind of actor who disappears so completely into a role that you forget you are watching someone perform. John Turturro is that actor. Over four decades, he has built one of the most distinctive bodies of work in American film — not through franchise stardom or awards-season campaigns, but through an almost reckless commitment to the strange, the difficult, and the human.
On Monday, November 2 at 7:00 PM, Turturro comes to MDC Wolfson's Chapman Center in downtown Miami to receive the Variety Creative Vanguard Award at Miami Film Festival GEMS — and to sit down for a 75-minute career conversation moderated by Ramin Setoodeh, Variety's Co-Editor in Chief. Tickets are available at the Miami Film Festival website.
The Career
Turturro's filmography reads like a map of the best American cinema of the last 40 years. He broke through with Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing in 1989 and has worked with Lee repeatedly since. His collaborations with Joel and Ethan Coen are among the most celebrated actor-director partnerships in the business: Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink (for which he won the Palme d'Or at Cannes), The Big Lebowski, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? He appeared in Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money and Robert Redford's Quiz Show. More recently: Pedro Almodovar's The Room Next Door, Matt Reeves' The Batman, and three Transformers films.
On television, his range is just as striking. He played the lead in Monk. He earned Emmy nominations for The Night Of. He appeared in Mr. & Mrs. Smith and, most recently, Severance — the Apple TV+ series that has become one of the defining shows of the decade.
He won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for Barton Fink. He played Jesus Quintana in The Big Lebowski. He is in Severance. The range is genuinely absurd.
Turturro is also a director and writer. His films behind the camera include Mac, Illuminata, and Fading Gigolo. He is not an actor who coasts. Every role — from the most obscure art film to the biggest studio production — gets the same intensity.
The New Film
The conversation at GEMS will also cover Turturro's new film, The Only Living Pickpocket in New York, which screens at Silverspot Cinema on Thursday, October 29 at 7:00 PM — Opening Night of GEMS. The film follows an aging pickpocket in a race against time to return stolen loot before a vengeful crime family catches up with him. Tickets for the screening are available separately at the Miami Film Festival website.
