Jason Lee on Raising Hope: "It Was Like Going Back to Camp — I Think Raising Hope Has a Lot of Good Karma"
Two-time Golden Globe nominee Jason Lee — best known for his role as Earl Hickey on NBC's My Name Is Earl — made a special guest appearance on Fox's hit comedy Raising Hope as "Smokey Floyd," an overly made-up rock star who dreams of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Premier Guide Miami's Daedrian McNaughton spoke with Lee about reuniting with creator Greg Garcia and the Earl crew, the contrast between his dramatic Memphis Beat role and the comedic chaos of Smokey Floyd, and why he thinks Raising Hope has a lot of good karma.

Premier Guide Miami sat down to find out what that means — and what comes next.
With two Golden Globe nominations and two SAG Award nominations for his role on NBC's My Name Is Earl, Jason Lee has solidly established himself in film and television. On Fox's hit comedy series Raising Hope, Lee made a special guest appearance as "Smokey Floyd" — an overly made-up rock star who dreams of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — in the "Burt Rocks" episode (Tuesday, November 30, 9:01-9:30 PM ET/PT). Lee also starred in and produced My Name Is Earl, played "Dave" in the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, and was in production on Memphis Beat while co-writing a pilot for Adult Swim.
On whether Smokey Floyd will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: "I think he thinks he will be, but clearly he will not be."
On Memphis Beat as preparation: "Maybe it was. I was comfortable as Smokey on stage in the episode, so maybe all those episodes of performing in Memphis Beat prepared me. That's certainly two totally different characters — one likable and the other one just an idiot."
Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.
On what drew him to Raising Hope: "Memphis Beat has been a little bit more dramatic, and it was nice to put a wig on and some make-up and just act kind of a mess. It was sort of a reunion because a lot of the crew on Raising Hope came from Earl. It was just amazing to reunite with Greg Garcia and a lot of the writers and crew members and just go and have fun and improvise and goof off. It was like going back to camp and getting to play and have fun for a few days. It was really, really, really fun."
On the Raising Hope cast: "They are all extremely talented. It was strange to go to a set that felt like I was on the set of Earl because so many of the crew members were the same, but it wasn't my show. I'm looking around at the actors and it was their own well-oiled machine. Everybody got along. It was just good solid people, really talented actors. Lucas Neff, the main kid — it's his first gig and he was very humbled by it. Greg surrounds himself with really good people, and I think, no pun intended, Raising Hope has a lot of good karma."
