Gencom Just Acquired the InterContinental Miami. Here Is What That Means for Downtown.

The 652-room waterfront hotel at 100 Chopin Plaza — the one with the digital canvas that lights up the Downtown Miami skyline — has a new owner. Gencom, the firm behind the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne and the Miami Riverbridge project, acquired it in partnership with White Bridge Capital.

Gencom has acquired the InterContinental Miami, the 652-room waterfront hotel at 100 Chopin Plaza that sits at the confluence of the Miami River and Biscayne Bay. The deal was done in partnership with Miami-based White Bridge Capital. The hotel — the one whose digital canvas has been part of the Downtown skyline for years — is now the latest addition to a Gencom portfolio that already includes the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne and a majority interest in the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, reacquired just last December.

This is Gencom's second InterContinental-branded property, following its purchase of the InterContinental New York Times Square in late 2025. The firm is not new to Miami — it co-developed the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne in the late 1990s and recently completed a $100 million-plus transformation of that property. But the InterContinental acquisition is a different kind of bet: it is a statement on Downtown Miami specifically, and on the conviction that the neighborhood's trajectory is not slowing down.

What the Hotel Is

The InterContinental Miami is a 34-story property near Brickell, Bayfront Park, PortMiami, and the Central Business District. It has 652 rooms and suites — including 22 suites ranging from 850 square feet to a 2,800-square-foot Presidential Suite — and more than 90,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor event space across 35 meeting rooms. The hotel recently completed a renovation that updated room interiors, refreshed the Club InterContinental Lounge, and enhanced the pool cabanas and SkyLawn outdoor event space.

The food-and-beverage program is worth noting. Toro Toro, Richard Sandoval's Pan-Latin steakhouse, is in the building. So is Bluewater, the rooftop restaurant and bar overlooking Biscayne Bay. And Freddy's Speakeasy — a reservation-only, Prohibition-inspired cocktail bar — has been recognized by Miami New Times as its No. 1 Hotel Bar and by Wine Enthusiast among the Best Hotel Bars in America.

The Bigger Picture

Gencom is not just buying a hotel. The firm is simultaneously advancing Miami Riverbridge — a $1.5 billion-plus joint venture with Hyatt to redevelop the Hyatt Regency Miami and James L. Knight Center site along the Miami River. That project calls for two hotels, 700 apartments, 200,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and 50,000 square feet of public green space. The InterContinental acquisition adds a fully operational, recently renovated waterfront asset to that Downtown footprint while Riverbridge takes shape.

Alessandro Colantonio, Gencom's Chief Investment Officer, framed it plainly: "We have built a substantial footprint across some of Miami's most prominent hospitality and mixed-use destinations. Adding the InterContinental Miami further strengthens the portfolio and gives us an exceptional waterfront asset in the heart of Downtown Miami, a location that we believe will continue to benefit from the city's long-term economic growth."

For Downtown Miami, the transaction is another data point in a run that has included corporate relocations, sustained residential and mixed-use investment, and a year-round events calendar — Art Basel Miami Beach, Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, Miami Music Week, Miami Open — that keeps international travelers moving through the market. The InterContinental is now in the hands of a firm that has been building in this city for four decades and is clearly not done.
