Fashion icon Iman and internationally acclaimed designer Isaac Mizrahi sat down with Premier Guide Miami's Yetunde Taiwo ahead of the premiere of Bravo's The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection — a runway battle between two fashion houses of 12 professional designers, with Harper's Bazaar's Laura Brown serving as series judge. Premier Guide Miami sat down to find out what that means — and what comes next.
Bravo's The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection split 12 talented designers into two fashion houses, each tasked with creating a cohesive collection and producing a live fashion show every episode. Fashion icon Iman and designer Isaac Mizrahi hosted and judged, with Harper's Bazaar's Laura Brown as series judge. The winner would take home $125,000 furnished by TRESemme Professional Hair Care.
PGM: You are two reputable strong personalities in this industry. How were you able to balance your personalities and your styles of judging?
Iman: Isaac — they should really kiss his feet, these designers, because he is really the nugget of information that imparts to them on a weekly basis and goes to visit them in the studio while creating and guiding them. It is priceless. And as a model, as a businesswoman, I am also a consumer — a woman who wears these clothes. What we are looking for is things that will excite women and elevate them — something you have never seen before that you would love to wear.
Isaac Mizrahi: I've known Iman for quite a long time. And I feel like you will not believe the kind of authority that this woman brings to it. When she enters a room, when she says something — there were moments when I was looking at something and going on about what I thought, and then she would come out with something and I would literally be almost moved to tears because she got the emotional crux of it in five words. During the civil union challenge, I'm going on about the linen and the details, and then Iman suddenly says, "The thing you got about this collection is love. It's about love." And I swear, I was sobbing because she's right. Iman, equal sign, posterity.
Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.
On Laura Brown: Iman: She comes from Bazaar, so it's a totally different point of view. Isaac: And quite a profound one. She knows what's in the actual world — that's part of her job. I always fear what editors have to say because they're right. They are the ones who see everything and they have absolutely no axe to grind.
Iman: I can't wait for you guys to see the show — where it starts from and where it goes. It surprised us and elated us and beyond the moon. We could not have expected or planned it this way. The last collections are truly divine.
The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection premiered on Bravo on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Interview conducted by Yetunde Taiwo/Premier Guide Miami.
