Greg Garcia and Martha Plimpton on Raising Hope: "There Is a Certain Warmth in a Domestic Comedy"

Emmy Award-winning creator Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl) and actress Martha Plimpton sat down with Premier Guide Miami's Daedrian McNaughton ahead of the one-hour Halloween special of FOX's Raising Hope — the single-camera family comedy about 23-year-old Jimmy Chance, who finds himself raising a baby after a chance encounter with a wanted felon. Garcia and Plimpton discussed the show's full-season pickup, Cloris Leachman eating actual shaving cream on set, the family's musical DNA, and why Garcia always knew exactly who he wanted in every role.

Premier Guide Miami sat down to find out what that means — and what comes next.

Emmy Award-winning creator Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl) launched Raising Hope on FOX — a single-camera family comedy about 23-year-old Jimmy Chance (Lucas Neff), who finds himself raising a baby after a chance encounter with a wanted felon. The show stars Martha Plimpton as Virginia, Garret Dillahunt as Burt, and Cloris Leachman as Maw Maw, and was picked up for a full season.

On why family-themed comedies: Greg Garcia: "I don't think it's strategic at all. I think there are a lot of stories to be told with a domestic comedy. Everybody has a family. Everybody at the end of the day wants the family to get along. I think there is a certain amount of warmth in a domestic comedy that is a little easier to achieve. I enjoy writing that stuff."

Martha Plimpton on what she finds most exciting: "The thing I'm enjoying the most is working with these really awesome actors on this really funny, smart material. When we get together every week to read through it we just crack up. It's not just that it's funny — it feels very well rooted in who these people are. They feel like actual people. That's really great."

On Cloris Leachman: Garcia: "There's a scene where Martha is shaving Cloris' legs and Garret is cleaning Cloris' ears with a Q-tip. At a certain point Cloris takes it upon herself to reach down and take the shaving cream off of her legs and just starts eating it. She eats handfuls and handfuls of it. No one told her to eat it but they started laughing so she kept eating more and more. It was completely fantastic." Plimpton: "Cloris is the one who gets the leash. This is a woman who can find 15 jokes in one-half a joke. She is fearless, totally, and really basically willing to do anything for a gag and then some."

Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.

On the full-season pickup: Plimpton: "It feels awesome. It feels really good that FOX is behind the show and likes what we're making because we're having a really good time doing it. Sometimes there can be a disconnect — the people making the show are having an awesome time but the people airing it are like, 'Nah.' So it's really nice that they're enjoying it as much as we are."

On the cast: Garcia: "I got incredibly lucky that I have all the people that would be best for these roles playing these roles. Everybody just feels like these characters. You don't see anybody on screen trying — they're just doing it great."

Raising Hope airs Tuesdays at 9:00 PM ET/PT on FOX.
