The seat behind the microphone at Kaseya Center has been occupied by one voice for 35 years. Michael "Mike B" Baiamonte called three championships, thousands of possessions, and more walk-off moments than anyone can count before retiring at the close of the 2025–26 season — the second-longest-serving PA announcer in NBA history. The Miami Heat spent the offseason looking for someone who could hold that room. They found him running a nonprofit.

Gale Nelson, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, is the new Voice of the Heat for the 2026–27 season. For more than 20 years, Nelson has led the organization through Miami-Dade, championing one-to-one mentorship for thousands of young people — work significant enough that Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava proclaimed a "Gale Nelson Day" in his honor. He will keep both roles.

"Every kid who hears my voice in that arena should know that someone believes in them. That's what mentorship is. You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be present." — Gale Nelson

Nelson's path to the microphone started in a high school gym in Toledo, Ohio. His principal — the late Mr. James Ray, a former NBA player — handed a freshman named Gale Nelson a mic and put him in front of a crowd for the first time. That moment, decades ago, is the direct line to the seat he steps into now. "This is a dream, and I do not take it lightly," Nelson said. "Mike B set the gold standard. My job is to honor that legacy and bring my own energy to every single possession. Kaseya Center is the loudest room in Miami, and I cannot wait to lead the charge."

Michael McCullough, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for the Heat, put it plainly: "We were intrigued right from the start when we heard Gale, and we knew he could be exactly what we were looking for." Nelson makes his debut on October 6 at the annual Red, White & Pink intra-squad scrimmage, followed by his first home preseason game on October 8 against the New Orleans Pelicans.
