Christopher Lloyd on Fringe: "My Character Goes Through an Experience He Never Anticipated — His Efforts Had to Adjust and Hope for a Good Outcome"

Three-time Emmy Award-winning actor Christopher Lloyd — Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and Doc Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy — guest stars on FOX's Fringe as Roscoe Joyce, the keyboardist of 1970s band Violet Sedan Chair, in the episode "The Firefly." Violet Sedan Chair happens to be the favorite band of Walter Bishop (John Noble), the slightly off-kilter scientist at the heart of the series. After suffering big losses and watching his star fade, Joyce has shut himself off from society — a role Lloyd, a self-described introvert, found deeply relatable. Premier Guide Miami's Daedrian McNaughton spoke with Lloyd about the episode, his approach to the piano (he is not a player, but the production rigged the keys so he could mime convincingly), and the joy of reuniting on set with his old friend John Noble.

After suffering big losses and watching his star fade, Joyce has shut himself off from society — a role Lloyd, a self-described introvert, found deeply relatable. An Observer makes contact with the Fringe Team to help rectify a mistake, while Walter befriends Joyce and learns the real reason the band broke up — discovering that the lives of these two men, who have never met before, overlap in strange and unexpected ways.

On what to expect from the episode: "I was very excited about this role. I had this episode that was a very interesting piece to work with. My character goes through an experience that he never anticipated would have happened to him, and his efforts had to adjust and adapt to that and hope for a good outcome."

Love Miami

Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.

On playing the piano for the role: "I am not a piano player. I had piano lessons growing up. I am not a piano player but they made it so I could pound on the keys without making any noise, and follow the goal of what they have written at that point for me to play. I pretended I was playing the piano all the time. I have a feeling of the body movement that went along with it, so hopefully that held me through. The script gave me so much information and clues that I was able to follow."

Lloyd, who describes himself as an introvert in his personal life, found a natural connection to Roscoe Joyce's retreat from society. The episode also gave him the opportunity to reunite on set with his old friend John Noble, who plays Walter Bishop — the scientist who idolizes Joyce's band. Noble had previously described the experience as "just having these two old guys reminiscing," calling it "a really wonderful opportunity."
