On the third Saturday of September, the world's largest cruise company sent its people to the shoreline. Carnival Corporation mobilized crew and shoreside teams across six continents for the 41st International Coastal Cleanup Day — a global event organized by Ocean Conservancy that has engaged 19 million volunteers and removed 400 million pounds of trash since 1985.
In Miami, Carnival Cruise Line shoreside teams gathered at Oleta River State Park. Up the coast in Seattle, Holland America Line partnered with a local nonprofit for a beach cleanup at Myrtle Edwards Park along the Puget Sound. In Europe, Costa Cruises employees and their families joined partner associations Piantando and Blue-Life for a river cleanup that intercepted nearly 400 pounds of inland plastic and aluminum before it reached open water. The company's Center for Simulation and Maritime Training (CSMART) in the Netherlands organized its own cleanup at Almeerderstrand.
"The oceans, waterways and coastlines we sail are central to what we do, and protecting them is a responsibility we take seriously." — Lars Ljoen, Chief Maritime Officer, Carnival Corporation
The scale of the effort reflects a year-round commitment. In 2025, Carnival Corporation ran nearly 100 cleanup events across two dozen locations spanning North America, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific — removing more than 33,000 pounds of debris. This year's International Coastal Cleanup Day added to that record, with crew members from ships across the Caribbean, Latin America, Alaska, Florida, Europe, and Australia coordinating shore cleanups alongside local environmental organizations and port partners.
