California has always been a state of mind as much as a state of the union. It is the place where America's restlessness found its western edge and decided to stay, to plant vineyards and build missions and dream in the golden light that falls differently here than anywhere else on earth. A road trip through Napa Valley and down to Carmel is an education in that particular California dream.

Napa Valley in summer is almost aggressively beautiful. The vines are heavy with fruit, the hills are the color of old gold, and the air carries the faint sweetness of fermentation — the smell of transformation, of grapes becoming something greater than themselves. Every bend in the road reveals another winery, another tasting room, another opportunity to stand in a barrel cave and contemplate the alchemy of wine.

The great wineries of Napa — Opus One, Stag's Leap, Caymus, Far Niente — are temples to a particular American ambition: the belief that with enough passion and enough land and enough patience, you can make something world-class. And they have. Napa wines now sit alongside the great Bordeaux and Burgundies of France, a fact that would have seemed impossible a generation ago.

From Napa, the road south leads through San Francisco and down the coast to Carmel Valley Ranch, a resort that captures the essence of California's ranch culture while adding every conceivable luxury. The property spreads across 500 acres of rolling hills, with vineyards and lavender fields and a Pete Dye golf course that winds through the landscape like a green ribbon.

The accommodations at Carmel Valley Ranch are lodge-style suites with wood-burning fireplaces and private decks overlooking the valley. In the evenings, the sky turns colors that no painter has ever quite captured — deep orange and rose and purple, the palette of a California sunset that makes you understand why people have been trying to describe this light for centuries.

The food at the resort's restaurant, The Valley Kitchen, is farm-to-table in the truest sense — much of what appears on the plate was grown on the property or sourced from nearby farms. It is cooking that tastes of place, of this particular valley, of this particular season.

California dreaming, it turns out, is not a dream at all. It is a road trip you can take, a glass of wine you can drink, a sunset you can watch from a deck in the hills above Carmel Valley. It is entirely, gloriously real.
