Inside the Boeing 787 Dreamliner Global Dream Tour
During its Global Dream Tour stop at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in May 2012, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner offered media and dignitaries a firsthand look at its dimmable smart-glass windows, larger overhead bins, motion-sensitive lavatory, crew bunks, and refrigerated beverage carts.
Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
As I entered the entryway of the Boeing 787 Demo model aircraft, it felt as though I had stepped into the private suite of a posh hotel. The entryway was open and inviting — unlike anything on any commercial aircraft currently on the market.
During the week of May 7, 2012, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner landed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C. Currently on a Global Dream Tour, members of the media, airline professionals, dignitaries, and Washington insiders were invited aboard. I was among those who had a chance to see the Dream Tour 787 firsthand — outfitted with special features that would make any traveler happy.
There were several passenger-preferred features that would please the frequent flyer and awe the non-jetsetter. Let's just say it was flyer-friendly.
Designed to improve passenger views, the windows are larger and offer a dimmable option in place of the standard window shade. Made with smart glass, they are easy to adjust and give travelers a clearer, wider look at the world outside.
Storage worries are solved with larger overhead bins that accommodate up to four average-size roller bags — fitting easily into a higher-than-normal ceiling. More room, no more head-bumping.
For passengers who occasionally forget to flush, the aircraft comes equipped with a motion-sensitive toilet that handles the job automatically. It also recognizes when you stand or sit.
During turbulent weather, the cabin is noticeably calmer and offers a smoother ride — reducing the passenger experience of motion sickness.
Sweet updates for crews include overhead crew compartments with up to four individual bunks for long-haul flights. And to eliminate the hassle of messy ice on galley carts, beverages are kept cold via refrigerated beverage carts.
This aircraft model featured a two-class configuration — business and economy — and can be designed to the buyer's specification.
