Black Nativity Returns: Langston Hughes' Gospel Nativity Comes to the Arsht Center, Pompano Beach, and Norton Museum

Black Nativity is one of the most joyful and moving theatrical experiences on the South Florida calendar. Langston Hughes wrote it. Gospel music carries it. And every year, it fills the room.

Arts & Culture

Black Nativity — the African-American telling of the Nativity story based on the Song Play written by acclaimed poet and playwright Langston Hughes — returns to South Florida for its annual run from November 27 through December 18, 2026.

The show recreates the journey of Mary and Joseph, resplendent in African costumes, to Bethlehem, accompanied by a rousing repertoire of spirituals. The combined African-American viewpoint and gospel music make Black Nativity a truly unique and entertaining theatrical experience. Run time is 1 hour 30 minutes with a 10-minute intermission. Recommended for all ages.

The production plays three venues: Pompano Beach Cultural Center (November 27–29), the Adrienne Arsht Center (December 11–13), and Norton Museum of Art for Art After Dark (December 18 at 5:00 PM). Supported by the Warten Foundation, Wayne & Lucretia Weiner, Miami Salon Group, City of Pompano Beach, the Adrienne Arsht Center, and Norton Museum of Art.

Tickets are available at arshtcenter.org and nortonmuseum.org. The Adrienne Arsht Center is located at 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132.
