Avianca Marks 80 Years in Costa Rica with 'Orgullosamente Tica' — and 11 Weekly Nonstops from the US

Avianca is celebrating more than 80 years of continuous service in Costa Rica with the launch of 'Orgullosamente Tica,' a campaign honoring the airline's deep ties to the country. For US travelers, that means 11 weekly nonstop flights to San José — seven from Miami, four from Washington Dulles — plus an updated Insignia business class suite arriving in early 2027.

Avianca, part of Abra Group, is marking more than 80 years of continuous service in Costa Rica with the launch of Orgullosamente Tica, a campaign honoring the airline's long-standing ties to the country. For travelers flying from South Florida, the practical headline is straightforward: seven weekly nonstop flights between Miami and San José, with four additional weekly nonstops from Washington Dulles.

On the Miami–San José route, passengers can book Business Class Americas, which includes priority ground services, access to Avianca and Star Alliance lounges, additional baggage allowance, Lifemiles accrual and seating in the first three rows of the cabin. For travelers connecting to Europe or flying the Bogotá–JFK route, Avianca offers INSIGNIA by Avianca aboard Boeing 787 aircraft — and an updated Insignia cabin with private suites featuring sliding doors and fully flat seats is expected to begin service between January and February 2027.

Business Class Americas on the Miami–San José route includes priority services, lounge access and onboard service calibrated to the length of the flight.

Avianca's network from San José covers nearly 90 weekly flights across seven routes, including San Salvador, Bogotá, Medellín, Guatemala City, Mexico City, Miami and Washington Dulles. Travelers can also connect onward through Avianca's broader network, which serves more than 80 destinations across the Americas and Europe. According to the airline, approximately 50% of arriving passengers in Costa Rica are tourists.

In economy class on international flights longer than 3½ hours — including Miami–San José — all passengers receive meals and beverages, and every fare includes a carry-on bag up to 22 pounds. Wi-Fi is being gradually introduced across the fleet. The Avianca on Air platform offers more than 600 entertainment titles, including content from HBO Max, Sony Entertainment, Warner Bros., Apple TV, A24, Paramount, Formula 1 TV and LEGO.

The Orgullosamente Tica campaign is backed by partners including BAC and Esencial Costa Rica, the country's national brand. Avianca's local presence includes more than 500 direct employees in Costa Rica, and the airline received a 2024 Ecological Blue Flag award in the climate change category. Since February 2026, it has partnered with Fundación MarViva to provide flights for marine biologists working with coastal communities on responsible fishing and marine governance.
