Students to “Design a New DASH” (Design and Architecture Senior High)

DASH students prepare to redesign their public high school that has been frequently recognized across the United States for innovation in design education and also named the number one magnet school in the US. It has a history of graduating students who are the most highly recruited design visionaries to top colleges around the globe.

This semester senior students in the Architecture and Industrial Design classes at DASH will design a project based on how they envision a new DASH. Sponsored by philanthropists Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz and The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a total of 43 students will receive scholarships. Six students will receive $3,500 for first place awards, six students will receive $2,500 for honorable mentions and 31 students will receive $1000 for participation. The theoretical design project will be on a vacant land owned by DACRA in the Miami Design District.

Students will prepare drawings and three-dimensional models for the redesign of the school. They will develop ideas on how they envision the art school of the future. DASH has played a major role in the rebirth of the Miami Design District and the students will be asked to treat the new design as a cultural hub for the community. Craig Robins, President of DACRA and longtime supporter of DASH, and John Marquette of Vitra, are also involved in this project. Local architects and designers will jury the students’ work. The competition will end in a community exhibit and scholarship award presentation.

This is the third year that Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz have sponsored the scholarship award competition and the second year that the Knight Foundation has matched the de la Cruz donation.

Both the de la Cruz and Knight Foundation have committed funds for three years to continue this scholarship award.
