Pall Mall Art Advisors, ForeFront Capital Partners and Quintessentially Lifestyle are presenting a collection of Myanmar works of art in Miami Beach in December

Pall Mall Art Advisors and ForeFront Myanmar are bringing 30 unique works of art by 12 Myanmar contemporary artists to Miami. The pieces will be exhibited for three days during Art Basel, the premier international art show held annually in Miami Beach in December. It is the first time collectors at Art Basel will have access to the works of Contemporary Myanmar artists.

The Myanmar art also will be featured exclusively at a special invitation-only show and cocktail party at 1545 Collins Avenue, Miami on Thursday, Dec. 4, co-sponsored by Pall Mall, Forefront Myanmar and Quintessentially Lifestyle, a global concierge company. Artists Htein Lin and Khin Zaw Latt will speak at the show and discuss their art. All works will be for sale. Guided tours of the collections will begin on December 3rd and run through December 5th at 11:00 and 3:00.

An exhibition at Freeman’s auction house in Philadelphia and at an exhibition in Los Angeles will follow the Art Basel debut. In March, the artwork will be offered for sale at the Venice Biennale. http://www.labiennale.org/en/art/index.html.

“Pall Mall is thrilled to present these talented Myanmar artists and their outstanding work at Art Basel,” Pall Mall President Anita Heriot said. “We know that when people experience these extraordinary pieces of art they will be incredibly excited.”

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is one of the last remaining major art frontiers. During the last few years, as the nation moved away from oppressive military rule and censorship, Myanmar artists could finally share their work and market it to the world.

Despite limited contact with the outside world during the repressive years, Myanmar artists taught themselves in Eastern and Western traditions, benefitting from the influence of neighbors India, China and other Southeast Asian nations.

As a result of the suppression of artistic expression for many years, Myanmar art is very complex. Artists tackle difficult issues but express them in historical artistic techniques. Today, Myanmar artists are trying new things, creating modern works with layer and depth, contributing in a major way to the development of contemporary art in the modern world. The result is distinctive and spontaneous.

“Before my brush touches the canvas, I don’t give any thought to what I am going to paint,” said Eikaza Cho, one of the emerging Myanmar artists. This approach has been described as “aesthetic aerobics,” the result of honing his creative ability and stretching his creative muscle.

“These artists are unbelievably talented, having won awards and honors from a wide variety of artistic and cultural organizations,” Heriot said. “We’re proud to showcase their work to gallery owners, private investors and general interest buyers. Art Basel is the perfect place to present a new collection of this quality to the American audience, which is always looking to embrace new and original art.”

Art Basel, created in 1970 by several gallery owners in Basel, Switzerland, provides a platform for artists and galleries worldwide to show work from masters of modern and contemporary art, as well as pieces by newly emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, films, and performances are featured at annual shows in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami Beach, which alone hosted 75,000 attendees last year.

Htein Lin, one of the two artists attending the Miami Beach show, is a Myanmar artist and writer, and has been a comedian and actor. He developed his artistry while jailed for anti-government political activity. A major inspiration for his work is Buddhism, whose themes, stories and philosophy he incorporates in his art. He is a founding member of the London-based Burmese Theater Workshop.

Two of Lin’s paintings were purchased for the U.S. Embassy in Yangon, formerly Rangoon and the capital of Myanmar. His works also are a prominent part of private collections in countries across Europe and Asia.

Khin Zaw Latt, who also will be attending, received his B.A. degree in painting from Myanmar’s University of Culture. He received first prize at the Myanmar Portrait Awards in 2011 and first prize at the Myanmar Contemporary Art Awards in 2008. His work has appeared at exhibitions in major markets worldwide including Toronto, Hong Kong and Singapore and he has toured with his art in Europe, as well as in India and Nepal.

Lin and Latt will be discussing their own art as well as other Myanmar art that will be on display during Art Basel, including Eikaza Cho who is known for his use of color, line and distortion in his abstract work; Aung Myint, a pioneer in experimental art who confronts social and critical issues through a range of distinctive styles and media; Zwe Yan Naing, who studied at the State School of Fine Arts in Yangon and whose works are now on display at a cultural exhibition in Hong Kong; and Myint San Myint, who first studied physics and only later turned his hobby of painting into his life’s work.

The works of Myanmar artists Aung Htoo, Aung Ko, Fela, Soe Naing, Ye Min and Zaw Nyunt Pe also will be displayed.
