Neo-soul singer and pianist John Legend combines raw fervor with a burning precision. Legend was a child prodigy who grew up in Ohio. He left Ohio at 16 to attend college in Philadelphia, and it was there that he first found a larger audience. Not yet out of his teens, Legend was tapped to play piano on Lauryn Hill’sEverything Is Everything.”  He moved to New York, where he began to build a loyal following playing in nightclubs and also became an in-demand session musician, playing and occasionally writing for a wide array of artists, including Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West.  It wasn’t until West signed the young talent to his new label that the Legend name was adopted with Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory.

Get Lifted, his first studio album, was released later in the year. On the strength of the enduring single “Ordinary People,” the album reached the Top Five of the Billboard 200. This led to three Grammy Awards: Best R&B Album, Best R&B Male Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist. Once Again, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, followed and eventually went platinum. Legend’s musical talent made him a mainstream star.  He performed at Super Bowl XL in Detroit, the NBA All-Star Game, and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Pittsburgh. Legend released Wake Up!, which he recorded with the Roots. The album received raves from music critics and tackled tunes made famous by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone. The Curtis Mayfield-penned “Hard Times” was one of the record’s main singles; another hit, “Shine,” Legend’s own composition, earned him a Grammy Award. He and the Roots also won a Grammy for best R&B album. Outside of music, Legend is involved in numerous social and charitable causes.  He explained to Black Enterprise magazine why education is such an important issue to him. “I come from a city where 40 percent to 50 percent of our kids drop out of high school. I did well in high school and then went to an Ivy League school, but I was the exception. We need to do more to make sure every kid has a quality education.”
