IOWA HAWKEYES ARRIVE IN SOUTH FLORIDA FOR 2010 FEDEX ORANGE BOWL
The 10th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes (10-2) arrived early this evening at Miami International Airport to begin on-site preparation for the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl, to be played January 5, 2010 at Land Shark Stadium. The game will be televised live at 8 p.m. on the FOX Network, as well as on ESPN Radio.
The Hawkeyes are excited to arrive in somewhat sunny Florida to prepare for the upcoming game. They left Iowa City this afternoon where the high temperature was 21 degrees, the lowest wind chill was -3 degrees and two inches of snow had fallen in the last 24 hours, for South Florida, which experienced a high temperature of 78 degrees today.
“We’re pretty excited to play in any bowl game; that’s a tradition we’re thrilled to be part of. To be involved in a BCS game is great and the Orange Bowl is a great, great experience,” says Coach Kirk Ferentz. “Bowls are a matter of attitude more than schedule. Our guys have been really good so far this month and we need to continue that. One of the big challenges in a bowl is you’re away from home and in this case it’s a pretty exotic environment for all of us. It’s a little different than Iowa City, and a little sexier than some other places we’ve been. We want the guys to enjoy Miami, but we also want the guys to remember we’ve got a game to play and we all know that we’re playing an outstanding opponent so we’ve got a great challenge on our hands.
The team has arrived unusually early, but coach Ferentz thinks it’s necessary to better prepare the players and to get them acclimated to the weather.
“I don’t think it’s unusual (to come for the game early); most southern teams tend to stay closer to home and then travel down. For us we need to get outdoors, we haven’t had a chance to be outdoors since November. We can practice indoors, but it’s not quite the same. We want to also get our guys acclimated to the weather. There’s a big differential there. We practice in an indoor facility. The weather conditions aren’t anywhere comparable. We also want to get guys used to
being in this environment,” he says.
The Hawkeyes will practice tomorrow, and all week leading up to the game at Barry University in Miami Shores, but for now they plan to defrost and enjoy a few hours of Miami.
“I’m sure the guys will wander around this evening and soothe some of their curiosity and we’ll get to work tomorrow,” says Coach Ferentz. “This weather feels very good to us. We’ll have a late curfew the first couple of nights. We’ll let them go wherever they want to go within reason.”
Iowa quarterback, Ricky Stanzi, who suffered a sprained ankle in the Hawkeyes’/Northwestern game is back and will continue training for the big game.
“I’ve come back from the injury with at least three or 4 week of practicing so I’m pretty much all the way back up to speed with conditioning. It’s surprising to see when you’re gone for three weeks how much you need to work on your fundamentals to get back into sync. We’ve had time to do that in Iowa and we’ll have to put more time in here. We have a lot more work to get done. The layoff was definitely beneficial for the guys on our team that have been injured and having
that time to rest your bones definitely helps us out. We’re excited for our opportunity,” he says.
Iowa’s opponent, 9th ranked Georgia Tech (11-1) will arrive on Wednesday from Atlanta. This will mark the first meeting ever between these schools and is only the second time in Orange Bowl history that the Big Ten will face the ACC. The two conferences previously met in the 2006 FedEx Orange Bowl where Joe Paterno and his Penn State Nittany Lions outlasted Bobby Bowden and the Florida State Seminoles 26-23 in a triple-overtime thriller.
