FREE Family Fest Presents: Terrance Simien and Creole 4 Kidz

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) is proud to continue the 11th season of its free FAMILY FEST series with a multicultural music experience for all ages starring Terrance Simien that will take audiences on a journey into the history of the Louisiana-based genre of zydeco music and Creole culture.

Multiple Grammy Award winner Terrance Simien (@zydecorocks) has been sharing his zydeco roots music for more than three decades. He and his Zydeco Experience band offer audiences the opportunity to learn about the rich Creole culinary traditions, the origins of gumbo, and even a few French Creole words and phrases.

The Creole 4 Kidz program has reached more than half a million K-12 students, parents and educators since its inception in 2000. Simien and the Zydeco Experience have led the charge to educate students through residencies all over the country, from Berklee College of Music in Boston to the Ordway in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Simien’s music has been featured in films such as Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. He collaborated with renowned composer Randy Newman on the song “Gonna Take You There,” and made history by being the first zydeco song to be featured in a Disney film.

Having a distinct sound inspired by the culture of his native Louisiana, Simien takes audiences on a journey to the birthplace of zydeco music: the rural prairies and bayous of Louisiana. Among numerous concert tours and appearances, Simien and his band have also shared studio and stage with artists such as Dave Matthews Band, Paul Simon, and Los Lobos.
