Florida Grand Opera’s Curator of Visual Art for Patron Spaces, Leonor Anthony presents a special opportunity for patrons attending the Miami premiere of Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s biopic opera, Frida. The art exhibit will feature six Latin female artists from Miami, March 21, 23, and 24 at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium. The exhibit will be open one hour prior to the scheduled performance time, and during intermission for all ticketed patrons.

Curatorial Statement:

The title of this exhibit is “Ides of March.” Notable for the Romans as a deadline for settling debts. Feast of Anna Perenna, goddess of the year (Latin annus). In the later Imperial Rome period, the Ides began a “holy week” of festivals celebrating Cybele -also known as the Magna Mater (“Great Mother ). And the murder of a little known emperor by the name of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The 21st Century has so far been characterized as the “age of accelerations,” with significant advances in the fields of science and technology that have revolutionized the way we communicate and how we see t he world. Paradoxically, in the same period, we have also experienced a deceleration in the march towards gender equality. In a world full of conflict and an environment, where women’s rights continue to be repressed or called into question, this exhibit aims to highlight and bear witness to women’s contributions and their expanding roles, including their positions of power, through an inspection of women’s identities through the eyes of female artists. This exhibit will be focused around Frida – the woman artist, and the audacity of courage, against all odds. The curation focuses on the individual artists themselves and their search for equality and freedom of expression .
