Bike Sharing programs have hit the streets of over 500 cities worldwide.  With the enormous growth of these programs in South Florida, even more bikes will be on the road. One organization has been hard at work making the community more bike-friendly for the City of Coral Gables. Bike Walk Coral Gables was formed in 2011, and this year will celebrate the 4th Annual Gables Bike Day on Sunday, March 1st from 11a.m. – 3p.m. in front of historic Coral Gables City Hall

The move to City Hall gives organizer, Bike Walk Coral Gables great space to expand on the family fun and festivities.  This year the event coincides with Florida Bicycle Month and is the premier kickoff event for the start of the county’s Bike305 Month, which will also help to draw even more attention to this worthy cause.  Biking is not just a sport or form of exercise, for many it is also a mode of transportation. The city of Coral Gables is one of the first in South Florida to create a master plan for cyclists that will include more bike lanes, linear trail parks, bike racks and other facilities throughout the City Beautiful.

Bike Walk Coral Gables invites all cyclists, skaters, parents and children to this free community event sponsored by Baptist Health South Florida, exclusive wellness sponsor, along with the City of Coral Gables, Miami-Dade County, No Boundaries, Tarpon Bend, Bike305, Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables, Coral Gables Museum, and Shake 108, a local non-profit radio that will be animating the crowd in attendance. This day is all about promoting health, physical activity and bike safety and includes guided bike tours throughout Coral Gables, healthy food and drink vendors, Bike Rodeo (teaching kids safety), live music, art bike exhibit, scavenger hunt, giveaways, kids entertainment and much more. There will be a warm-up exercise by Iron Tribe Fitness, a one hour Zumba class courtesy of the Coral Gables Youth Center, a pilates class by Envy Pilates, and a fitness work out by Orange Theory Fitness. Bike Tech will be selling t-shirts, bicycles and Bike Tech KITS.

“Gables Bike Day helps call attention to cycling in the Gables and the benefits of having an area to do it in. The reason we do the event is to keep the needs of cyclists at the forefront, with a goal to make our streets safe for the many residents and students that ride in the city,” said Chairman of Bike Walk Coral Gables, John Swain.

There will be a launch party on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:00PM at Tarpon Bend in Coral Gables to officially announce the event and its sponsors. The goal is to make the streets of Coral Gables safe for the many residents and students that ride in the city.
