A Vertical Tasting of Joseph Phelps Insignia

With the release of the 1974 Insignia, Joseph Phelps Vineyards became the first California winery to blend the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties under a proprietary label. The name Insignia was selected to represent the finest lots available from each vintage, and to emphasize the importance of blending over varietal designation as a determinant of quality. After many years of developing vineyards in Napa Valley’s premium growing regions, the 2004 vintage marked the first Insignia crafted from 100% estate-grown fruit. This six-vintage retrospective tasting will begin with 2002 Insignia, named “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator in 2005, and conclude with 2007 Insignia which was given a 96 rating by Wine Spectator .  The tasting will be led by winery President Bill Phelps, son of founder Joseph Phelps.

Led by experts, each session provides an opportunity to deepen your knowledge of specific wines and identify the qualities of each that most appeal to you. Wine Spectator Executive Editor Thomas Matthews will introduce this session.
